Romance Studies: Culture and History

Presentation

The Romance Studies: Culture and History team (Culture et histoire dans l'espace roman – CHER, UR 4376), which was created in 2009 to provide a space for research in Romance Studies within the University of Strasbourg, is currently made up of around twenty teacher-researchers, a dozen PhD students and a vast network of associate members. It is affiliated with the Doctoral School of Humanities (École doctorale des humanités). With its scientific focus covering Hispanic, Italian, Romanian and, in part, Portuguese-speaking studies, CHER is unique in the French university landscape.

The team's members are specialists in theatre studies, literature and cultural history, civilisation, linguistic historiography and text editing, covering a period from the Renaissance to the 21^st century.

The unit's current theme: 'Memory(-ies), representations and resonances' ('Mémoire(s), représentations et résonances'), like those of previous contracts, reflects the desire to promote inter-disciplinarity and to drive cross-disciplinary and collaborative activities.

CHER is well integrated into research and development entities (LETHICA, CREAA and HiSAAR, ED 520 and Eucor – The European Campus).

Topic 1 - From the dawn of modernity to the Enlightenment: culture and philology, the historiography of linguistics, critical editions, literature and the performing arts

Culture and history: Renaissance, 18^th century; Colonial history; Language, linguistics, historiography and language didactics; Theatre and opera: 16^th-18^th centuries.

Topic 2 - Contemporary field: literatures and visual and performing arts, civilisation and cultural history (19^th-21^st centuries)

Cultural history of Romance-speaking countries; Performing arts, visual arts and literatures of the Romance-speaking world; Translation programme for dramatic texts.
