Creating art and science together

As part of its arts-science strategy, the University of Strasbourg has launched CréaLab to facilitate exchanges between artists, culture stakeholders and researchers.

What is CréaLab?

CréaLab aims to bring the arts and science closer, serving as a helpdesk for collaboration between the different stakeholders. On the one hand, it supports laboratories in their arts-science collaborative projects. On the other, it helps those working in the cultural and creative industries (artists, cultural institutions, associations or collectives, etc.) with their requests for collaboration with the research sector.

CréaLab is also developing a cultural programme for the period between 2025 and 2029 focusing on three main topics: biodiversity, health and artificial intelligence, in collaboration with the Office for Cultural Activities (Service universitaire de l'action culturelle Suac) and the Office for Scientific Culture and Mediation – Jardin des sciences (JDS) of the University of Strasbourg.

Objectives

  • Develop an interface to facilitate artist-researcher collaboration
  • Provide laboratories with materials and support for their cultural projects
  • Foster scientific and creative innovation
  • Break down barriers between disciplines and encourage transdisciplinarity
  • Open up participation by involving more stakeholders and foster innovation at different stages (production, technology, prototyping, etc.)
  • Create new social, environmental and mental representations
  • Help society to better understand science

Services offered

  • Helpdesk for arts-science collaborative projects
  • Methodological advice to laboratories in setting up their cultural projects
  • Development of operational and financial partnerships
  • Project incubation and intermediation between researchers and artists
  • Support with research projects
  • Support for project leads in promoting their project (prototyping, performances, seminars, exhibitions, temporary or permanent art trails, workshops, meetings, production of artworks, creation of an application or virtual platform, etc.)

Types of projects

  • Artist residencies in laboratories
  • Researcher residencies or inviting researchers to work on a cultural or artistic project (contributing to knowledge, mentoring, providing technical or theoretical assistance, etc.)
  • Skill exchange between researchers and culture stakeholders (workshops, etc.)
  • Projects relating to the university's collections

Are you a researcher?

CréaLab welcomes any proposals for collaboration between research and culture. It supports laboratories in their quest for cultural partners and the implementation of partnerships.

Are you an artist/from the world of art or culture?

CréaLab supports cultural stakeholders in their collaborations with the research sector, from the definition of the research question to project promotion, via project engineering and partnership development.
